Batmobile : Corgi Boxes

1984

It’s a generic Corgi box, generic original tray, amended by someone to include extra cut outs and also they have had "267" printed on it.

The box and inlay is from a Routemaster bus, and the 267 probably done with Letraset rub-on letters.

The 1983 boxes was the last "officially-released'' Batmobile from Mettoy, as the company went into receivership at the end of that year. However, a buy-out by Mike Rosser in March 1984 meant that the future of this world-famous company was secured, and they commenced trading as Corgi Toys Ltd. During this period, existing stock of the C267 Batmobile may be continued to be sold but without license (?). This final yellow, black and red box that one associated with Mettoy had, for first time ''Corgi Toys Ltd'' printed on it, and was higher than the previous version.

This boxes was an universal version which "Corgi Toys Ltd" used for ALL their models... Corgi have some universal boxes with different size.

Of course if these boxes from 1984 was sales it’s with Wide Whizzwheels Batmobile, never with the 1973 Red Tyres version!!! But two of the red tyres do not fit exactly in the holes. The slots for the wheels are too narrow for the wide wheeled version. I have tried fitting the wide wheeled version into the slots and it does not fit.

With demise of Mettoy, all previous contracts and licenses were null and void. However, whilst Corgi's naw management team re-negocied their licencing terms with EON Productions (the makers of James Bond movies), they were allowed to sell-off existing stocks of their "007 DB5" in the new generic ''blue" packaging... but this never happened for the Batman licence!!!

Number "267" print on each side are genuine or not, i think not genuine... (the only way to determine a genuine 1984 Batmobile box was by the inner plinth everything else was universal which Corgi used for ALL their models)

Two of the tyres do not fit exactly in the holes. I think the tray may be genuine (a reference "52099 REF CZ" printed on it), but come from another model of Corgi Toys :

The Number "267" on the tray is printed by someone not by the factory (many inner tray left the factory without number),
Holes for front blade and tow hook look made by someone not by the factory.

Font type and size are not the same like use in this period on C271 boxes, why ??

The 1983 boxes was the last "officially-released'' James Bond Aston Martin DB5 from Mettoy, as the company went into receivership at the end of that year. During this period, existing stock of the C271 James Bond Aston Martin DB5 continued to be sold. This final yellow, black and red box that one associated with Mettoy had, for first time ''Corgi Toys Ltd'' printed on it, and was slimmer than the previous version.
